The Research Department of the Bank of Papua New Guinea launched two research working papers at the National Research Institute (NRI). “Demand for Money in PNG” by Mr Tanu Irau and “Estimating an Aggregate Import Demand Function for PNG” by Mr Boniface Aipi and Ms Gail Sabok were launched on 4th November, 2015.

These working papers are products of the Bank’s continued efforts in encouraging evidence based research on how our economy works.

Dr Gae Kauzi, Assistant Governor of Monetary and Policy Group said research is an important component in this complex world to try and understand the relationships especially in the field of economics. So research papers are produced to increase economic understanding and stimulate debate on economic matters.

He added that the research papers may sound technical and specific to the area of Central Banking and especially monetary policy, however, it has some relevance to the other sectors of the economy in that what happens in monetary policy transmission may affect other sectors.

Director of the National Research Institute Dr Charles Yala officially launched the two new research working papers, saying that it is good that we are using our people to do research internally and especially at the Bank and encouraged the team to work and produce more research papers.

Demand for Money in PNG and Estimating an Aggregate Import Demand Function for PNG are available and can be downloaded on the Bank website
