The Bank of Papua New Guinea celebrated its twenty-fifth Anniversary in November 1998. For this occasion, the Bank issued a special fifty toea (50t) coin depicting the stylist bird of paradise which is the logo of the Bank.
The design provides the important connection between the Silver Jubilee event, and the corresponding period it celebrates 1973-1998. The event and date are close together, which helps to simplify public recognition of the event from a historical and commemorative perspective.
The Bank of Papua New Guinea, the nation’s central bank, was established on 1 November 1973. Until this date the Reserve Bank of Australia had administered the banking system in Papua New Guinea. During the 25 years this institution has played a central and indispensable part in the stable development of the internal monetary and financial system and hence the domestic economy of Papua New Guinea.
The Bank of Papua New Guinea was proud to celebrate this important historic
occasion by issuing a special but limited quantity of this 1998 commemorative
50 toea circulation coin.
