Governor Bakani awarded Advocacy Champion Award for Financial Inclusion

Bank of Papua New Guinea Governor, Loi M Bakani CMG, has recently been awarded the Advocacy Champion award at a Global Policy Forum in Sochi, Russia organised by the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI). Assistant Governor, Mr Ellison Pidik received the award on behalf of Governor Bakani.

The Alliance for Financial Inclusion is the world’s leading organization on financial inclusion policy and regulation. AFI organises the Global Policy Forum every year focussing on the development and improvement of national financial inclusion strategies and policies and is a platform for financial regulators to exchange ideas and engage in peer to peer learning activities.

Since 2013, AFI has been honouring those whose participation and contribution to the AFI network sets them apart. This tradition continued at the 2018 AFI Awards ceremony in Sochi, Russia, where member institutions and individuals who have excelled in enhancing financial inclusion over the past year globally and in their respective countries.  The nominees have demonstrated strong leadership, supported peer learning services and stood up in support of AFI’s global advocacy for financial inclusion. The Centre for Excellence in Financial Inclusion and Governor of the Bank of PNG Mr Bakani was one of the recipients of these awards. He received the Advocacy Champion Award. This award recognizes members who have represented AFI on various global platforms and raised the AFI flag as a global advocate for financial inclusion.

As a policy leadership alliance, AFI aims to elevate the voices of its members to set the global financial inclusion agenda and draw attention to the policy implementation challenges that require global support and governor Bakani has represented PNG and AFI on various global platforms to address financial inclusion.

BPNG joined as a member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) in 2009. As a member of AFI, BPNG signed the Maya Declaration in 2013, committing to a number of financial inclusion and financial literacy goals. Additionally, BPNG is a member of the AFI Pacific Islands Regional Initiative (AFI-PIRI), which seeks to create conditions that lead to the empowerment of Pacific islanders through financial inclusion.
